A World Without Sound

Hypothetical language and interface design for a world that uses sign language to communicate. In such a world, ideographic or pictographic scripts would be the norm, as phonetic scripts with letters would no longer be feasible. I created a variety of sample words in this language along with an example of its grammar. To add a layer of emotiveness (the kind expressed by signing in person, using facial expressions, etc.), written language can be complemented with a color-saturation-shape index that coveys emotional information that may not be gleaned by a simple written sentence. I then created several mockups of how this information could be conveyed through video or signage, as well as an interface for digital communication.
