Backlit Manuscripts

This project is a hybrid of two distinct styles separated by centuries. The pages are recreations and reimaginings of illustrated manuscripts from Europe and the Middle East, each made entirely from digital letterforms and punctuation. By eschewing both color and traditional markmaking tools, I sought to elevate digital text and the digital realm alongside it to the levels of religious worship so closely linked to manuscripts. Much like the illustrated manuscript’s eventual replacement by printing technologies after the 15th century, ASCII art was a form that wasn’t meant to last forever. I have attempted to create a piece that correlates this relationship, celebrating the advent of the digital era with the reverence normally reserved for bibles.
